AUTHOR BIO
ZHAO Chuang and YANG Yang are two professionals who work together to create scientific art. Mr. ZHAO Chuang, a scientific artist, and Ms. YANG Yang, an author of scientific children's books, started working together when they jointly founded PNSO, an organization devoted to the research and creation of scientific art in Beijing on June 1st, 2010. A few months later, they launched Scientific Art Projects Plan: Stories on Earth (2010-2070). The plan uses scientific art to create a captivating, historically accurate narrative. These narratives are based on the latest sci¬entific research, focusing on the complex relationships between species, natural environments, communities, and cultures. The narratives consider the perspectives of human civilizations while exploring Earth's past, present, and future. The PNSO founders plan to spend 60 years to do research and create unique and engaging scientific art and literature for people around the world. They hope to share scientific knowledge through publications, exhibitions, and courses. PNSO's overarching goal is to serve research institutions and the general public, especially young people.
PRAISE
"The illustrations, paintings based on life-sized models, are accompanied by imagined stories about the creatures as well as facts about their place in reptile history... science-based imagination for readers with a passion for prehistoric reptiles." —Kirkus Reviews
"This is such a fun book! Yang Yang weaves charming narratives that are like short stories, packed with information about these creatures and their lives, all set properly in time and location. The artwork by Zhao Chuang is phenomenal and detailed. Not only does his art match well with current scientific understanding, but they are colorful and vivid, drawing the reader in. If you're like me, you'll end up pouring over each piece for a good while. I was especially happy to see placodonts make an appearance (like Glyphoderma and Psephoderma) because they are just so wonderfully bizarre and still not well known. This is delightful for both the casual reader and those looking for lots of great information about some fascinating animals!" —Dr. Alexander K. Hastings, Fitzpatrick Chair of Paleontology at the Science Museum of Minnesota
"Zhao Chuang and Yang Yang have done it again with Age of Ancient Sea Monsters. Yang's colorful, engaging prose works in tandem with Zhao's gorgeous illustrations to breathe life into dozens of extraordinary sea creatures that range in age from well before the dinosaurs to beyond. And as with Zhao and Yang's previous books, among the prehistoric menagerie are many remarkable beasts that most people (including me, a professional paleontologist!) won't have heard much about before." —Dr. Matt Lamanna, Mary R. Dawson Associate Curator and Head of Vertebrate Paleontology, Carnegie Museum of Natural History
"This is a delightful book that takes a whimsical look at the lives of Mesozoic marine reptiles (and a few other extinct creatures of note), a category of fossil vertebrates that is near and dear to my heart. The imaginative and playful narrative will be of interest to younger readers who, one may hope, will be inspired to examine the natural world with heightened curiosity. Its greatest strength, however, is in the masterful depictions of these creatures and their underwater realm. Images of action, beauty, and broad swaths of color will enchant readers of all ages." —Dr. Glenn W. Storrs, Withrow Farny Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology at the Cincinnati Museum Center
"The Age of Ancient Sea Monsters is an informative and entertaining read. Yang's detailed narratives, along with Zhao Chuang beautiful illustrations, offers a unique vision of some of the most amazing creatures from around the world and through time that swam the prehistoric seas." —Dr. Thomas L. Adams, Curator of Paleontology and Geology at The Witte Museum
