PRAISE
"Read this page turner to know what to do and-as importantly-what not to do in M&A. You will be glad you did."
-Mark Victor Hansen, Author and Creator of The One Minute Millionaire and Chicken Soup for the Soul
"Losses from M&A transactions that fall short of expectations represent an opportunity of $3 trillion a year. Broken Handoff clearly addresses the vulnerabilities and shortcomings that cause these failures-and, more importantly, advances viable solutions. This book should be read by everyone anticipating an M&A transaction, funding, or liquidity event."
-James Keyes, Former CEO of 7-Eleven and Blockbuster, Horatio Alger Recipient
"Far too often M&A transactions pursue a path of lost opportunities. Broken Handoff provides a roadmap for productive engagement and realized potential. Necessary reading for both entrepreneurs and investors."
-Gil Marmol, Director at Footlocker and Vitamin Shop, Senior Partner at McKinsey (ret.), Harvard MBA
"Experience teaches us-too often the hard way-that marriage requires full commitment by both partners. Marital success isn't transactional. It's not a fifty-fifty thing. It requires 100 percent from each partner. In Broken Handoff: Saving Your Assets, Gorton, George, and Gordon invite us to the great unexplored frontier beyond the transactional, failure-prone side of corporate marriages to show the business partner in each of us how full commitment can bolster returns, encourage entrepreneurs, and move the needle in our economy."
-David M. Zumwalt, Serial Entrepreneur, Principal ZHI, Former CEO UVI Research and Tech Park, Founder CNet, Inc.
"This book provides a useful explanation and treatment of the M&A, funding, and liquidity transition process. I can only speak from the startup and growth company side, but I would suggest this as highly recommended reading in a business curriculum as well a valuable C-suite pocket guide for startups. I wish we had this book as we were starting Teladoc!"
-G. Byron Brooks, EE, MD, Teladoc Cofounder
"I have known Michael Gorton for over twenty-five years and played advising or consulting roles in many of his eleven startups. The problem he and his coauthors address in this book is one Mr. Gorton has lived through many times and I have dealt with as a consultant and in the university classroom. Books like this should be required reading for those interested in reducing the number of broken handoffs. An excellent reference for anyone involved in the M&A process."
-Jerry F. White, Director (ret.), Caruth Institute for Entrepreneurship at Southern Methodist University
"An informative and extremely well-written book that analyzes the common reasons for failure in M&A transactions and, most importantly, how to avoid the pitfalls."
-Avi Kahn, CEO, Hilti North America
"Broken Handoff smashes through the financial and theoretical rhetoric of M&A success and failures. Filled with insights and lessons learned from the school of hard knocks, this book should be required reading for all parties in the M&A dance-especially those seeking to avoid a postmerger cultural collision and declining productivity."
-Michael Schornstein, Advisory Board Member, CMO, and Startup Entrepreneur
"A must-read for any entrepreneur looking to sell a business or raise capital-and a should-read for any acquirer or investor seeking to retain a company's talent!"
-Chris Dupré, Managing Partner of a Middle-Market Private Equity Firm
"Reinforces what is often underestimated and yet essential for differentiated success-a trusting relationship amongst the management team, with shared aspirations for where the company is going and alignment and commitment to what it will take to get there, including the values and behaviors required from everyone involved. It's rarely enough to have a great product; a combination of the 'what' and 'how' is a clear recipe for a winning strategy."
-Joan Lavin, Chief Talent Officer, KKR
