What Do Women (Publishers) Want?
Women-owned publishing companies, like those founded by Milli Brown, Sara Gran, Dominique Raccah, and Nancy Traversy have emerged as a response to the male-dominated corporate publishing world. Gran, founder of Dreamland Books, highlights the industry's imbalance, noting how women are often only visible at lower levels. Raccah started Sourcebooks with little funding but grew it by focusing on diverse voices and decentralized operations. Traversy founded Barefoot Books to promote global diversity, emphasizing a compassionate, woman-centered work culture. Brown, of Brown Books, offers authors more control, challenging traditional publishing by giving them a say in their book's production.
